April 21, 2007 - Cretaceous and Tertiary Fossils, Butler Co, AL

April field
trip took us to Butler County where a creek has cut through
early
Tertiary and late Cretaceous sediments. Once again
as with
last months field trip to Green County we had some of the best spring
weather Alabama can offer, with the temperature reaching a pleasant 76
degrees.
Everyone met at a central location, and a brief introduction to the geology of the area was given before driving about 12 more miles to the entrance to the site. While past trips to

Submitted by Vicki Lais on Mon, 06/05/2006 - 11:00pmToday BPS went way down south to Clarke County,
Alabama. We were
quite excited because this was a new site Steve found, and we were
chomping at the bit, ready to go. We found a good variety of
bivalves and gastropods, a few shark teeth and ray teeth. The
most numerous fossil we found is Flabellum
cuneiforme pachyphyllum, a type of

Hardy
Souls headed down to Butler

tents,
anticipating a great day of hunting. We fell asleep serenaded
by
the sweet sounds of coyotes howling. Around midnight, more

found the group once
again at a
Butler County, Alabama site. A
number of gastropods, nautiloids, shark teeth, turritella, and broken
pieces of pottery were found on this private property which has become
one of our favorite spots.

August 23, 2003 - Butler and Covington Co, AL
Submitted by Vicki Lais on Sat, 08/23/2003 - 11:00pmBPS did a return trip to
Butler
County this month. South Alabama had a lot of rain this year,
and
the creek
looked very different from our previous trip; also, the water was much
higher this time. A number of nice teeth were found,
nautaloids,
and small gastropods on the ridge. The best entertainment for
the
day was watching Claire spin her way up the mountain, after getting

Submitted by Vicki Lais on Fri, 04/18/2003 - 11:00pmBPS visited a new location in Butler County this month for our field trip. The creek was shallow, making screening and hiking in the creek particularly easy. A number of shark teeth were found, including Odontipus robusta, scapanorhynchus and odontaspis elegans, and bones and teeth that we really wanted to pass off as fossils. Unfortunately,
